iOS 5 tethered and Semi-tethered jailbreak solutions are available but iBooks keeps on crashing on all iOS 5 jailbroken devices making it difficult to purchase and read Steve Jobs’ eagerly anticipated biography on your iDevices.
Indeed, the iBooks infrastructure for a jailbreaker running iOS 5 is a turbulent experience, and keeps on crashing, redering it quite useless. Fortunately, there is a workaround which brings back iBooks’ near-full functionality once again. Note: It’s a nice, temporary workaround that’s been tested to work.
How to Fix iBooks on iOS 5
Required Tools: iFile (available in Cydia, very useful and well worth the purchase)
Uninstall iBooks, and then reinstall iBooks from the App Store. ***Do not open the app after re-install***
copy iBooks.app from /var/mobile/Applications/(iBook’s folder)/ to the /Applications. ***You can use SBSettings, or just go through each folder to identify the correct iBooks folder.
Open: /Applications/iBooks.app/Info.plist and select property list editor;
Hit CFBundleIdentifier and change com.apple.iBooks to com.apple.iBooksFix
Now Close iFile and Respring.
There should be 2 iBooks icons on your Springboard. Delete the original iBooks app (rounded corners) and keep the square iBooks app.
iBooks should open now but, you cannot use iBookstore or sync books using iTunes. So, you need to follow the steps mentioned below to add new books purchased via iTunes to your iBooks…
Open iFile and select the Wi-Fi icon at the bottom of your screen.
Open your favoite web browser and point it to http://iphone.local:10000/
Now hit the Choose File button and locate your .epub (iBooks format) files and hit the Upload button to manually sync them to your device.
Now go back to var/mobile/Documents
Now you can view any uploaded .epub file in iBooks!
Like we told you before, it’s just a woraround not a perfect remedy, but much better than nothing.
What is Untethered, Tethered and Semi-Tethered jailbreak? what’s the difference between Untethered jailbreak, Tethered jailbreak, and Semi-Tethered jailbreak? Why is an untethered jailbreak desirable? and What’s Tether Boot?
Hit the jump to know the answers to all these questions…
Here’s an overview of Untethered Jailbreak, Tethered Jailbreak, and Semi-Tethered Jailbreak:
An untethered jailbreak is the most preferred type of jailbreak. Untethered jailbreak lets you jailbreak your device, use Cydia & other jailbreak tweaks and it does not require you to reboot with a connection to your computer or an external device capable of executing commands on the device. Untethered jailbreak provides trouble-free rebooting. You can reboot your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch normally, as many time as you want, without having to tether it to your computer to boot. Exploit used in untethered jailbreaks bypasses the iBoot sequence on its own, hence eliminating the need to connect with a computer to boot the device.
*** Untethered jailbroken iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch works normally, complete jailbreak features, Reboots normally, no consequences.
Tethered jailbreak is a least desirable jailbreak of the three. With a tethered jailbreak you cannot reboot your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch at all without doing a tethered boot. Tethered means being basically “attached” to your computer in a way; you must boot your device by running code on it (via the dock connector) to make use of an exploit. Since a tethered boot requires access to a computer, so if you’re on the way, away from a computer, and your device reboots due to any reason, you’re stuck with an Apple Logo on the screen.
*** A tethered jailbroken device offers complete jailbreak features, but requires that the device be connected to a computer each time it needs a reboot.
Hit next, follow the on-screen instructions to enter into DFU mode.
This should boot your device. Don’t forget to repeat the tether boot process every time you reboot your device.
Semi-Tethered jailbreak allows you to reboot your jailbroken iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch but not without some consequences. with limited jailbreak and stock functionality. After the jailbreak, you can reboot your device normally (without the need of a computer) but most of the jailbreak hacks, tweaks and even some stock apps like Safari won’t work. To regain the full functionality to you jailbroken device, you must perform a tethered boot (see the steps below). Semi-Tether jailbreak is much better than Tethered jailbreak, but not quite as good as the untethered jailbreak.
Semi-Tethered jailbreak = Tethered jailbreak + a package installed that allows you to reboot with limited use
The semi-tethered jailbreak will allow you to reboot on the road, but with limited functionality. It is enough that you are no longer stranded, and you can use your phone, text, and many other features. This is just until you get home and can use redsn0w again to “just boot tethered”. Once you do that, you’re back to fully functional state.

Dev-Team has released RedSn0w 0.9.9b6, 09.9b7 for Windows and Mac to jailbreak iOS 5 firmware. Previous RedSn0w release was Mac only. You can download RedSnow 0.9.9b6 to jailbreak iOS 5 from the links below…
“We’ve released version 0.9.9b6 of redsn0w, with both a functional fix and cosmetic fix for iOS5 jailbreakers. For iPhone3GS owners with the 06.15 baseband, this redsn0w eliminates the network crash you saw when using Location Services in iOS5 (in fact, you don’t even need to disable Location Services anymore during the initial setup). The cosmetic fix is to the visual countdown you see when going into DFU mode. It’s okay to re-run this redsn0w over an existing device jailbroken at iOS5. Just choose “Jailbreak” again and de-select Cydia (in other words, all the checkboxes will be unchecked). If you are lucky enough to have an old-bootrom iPhone3GS, please pre-select the IPSW first (redsn0w can’t yet auto-detect the FW version of your old-bootrom 3GS if it’s already been jailbroken).”
Update 1 (RedSn0w 0.9.9b7): After some feedback on reddit, we’ve decided to make the initial jailbreak as quick as possible by no longer “stashing” the applications by default during the redsn0w run. This reduces the time to actually perform the jailbreak from 210 seconds to 80 seconds (60 percent!). However, you make up for much of that the first time you launch Cydia, which will then want to stash the applications. You can choose whether you want redsn0w or Cydia to stash in the Preferences pane.
